5 Step Process of Video Creation for Training Videos

How hard is it to create corporate training videos? The process basically requires 5 steps that begin with an analysis of your training goals and objectives and ends with the distribution of your training videos to your team. Is it easy? Some of it is relatively simple, all of it is doable with the assistance of a full-service video production crew.

Step 1: Setting Goals & Objectives for Training

plan

The first step in the process is to set the goals and objectives for your video creation. Training videos should align with your business goals and objectives as well as with the rules and standards of your business. Before you can create training videos you need to consider the following:

  • What will your training strategy be and how will you achieve it?
  • What is the purpose of your training? What goals will your audience achieve following the training?
  • How will your objectives tie into the goals that you’ve set for your training?

You must think of all of this from the point of view that your employees or audience will have, not so much your own point of view.

Step 2:  Planning the Video Content & Production Needs

The next step in video creation for training videos is to plan out the content and your production needs. You won’t write the script yet, but you should have a good idea of the subject matter that you’ll include as well as what your production needs are going to be. Consider the following:

  • Who you’ll hire to film the video.
  • What type of training video you’ll create.
  • What type of equipment will be required (a professional film crew will handle this if you hire a pro).
  • Where you want to film the training and when to film.
  • What your budget and timeline look like for your training video creation.

Step 3:  Writing the Script & Formatting the Design

script for short video

With the preparation of your content, goals and objectives in order and a team in place to produce the content you’re at step 3 of video creation. Training videos must have a script and they generally have a certain format depending on the type of video that you chose. You’ll write the script and begin to outline the storyboard or design for your video during this step.

If you’re working with a professional film crew, they’ll handle these steps for you. The script is generally about 150 words per minute of video and should include anything you want to be spoken during the narration or voiceover of your film.

For the storyboard, the film crew will begin to brainstorm and outline each scene, shot, and movement that is to take place on camera. You’ll begin to get a better visual idea of how the video will play out at this point.

Step 4:  Shooting the Video and Editing the Final Cut

This step is almost always covered by a film crew, unless you have a background in filmmaking and do not decide to hire a crew to assist you. Shooting the video is one of the most challenging parts of the video creation. Training videos must be filmed with professional equipment including lighting, camera, and audio to ensure they come across professionally to your audience.

Once all scenes, shots and b-roll has been filmed the process will move onto editing the video. Creation of training videos requires a lot of editing to ensure not only professionalism, but to reinforce important topics with supporting text overlay as well as to incorporate things like interactive elements, links, and transitions to keep the viewer engaged.

Step 5:  Distributing the Training to Your Team

The final step of the process is to distribute the training to your team. At this point there are no other steps involved in video creation. Training videos are typically incorporated into a LMS (Learning Management System) which provides an easy way for management to distribute video content to a team and features a variety of analytics and monitoring features to ensure teammates are engaging in the training as expected.
