Learning how to write a spec script is something that aspiring screenwriters and filmmakers frequently find themselves having to focus on. If you’re interested in writing screenplays for Hollywood. Or have an intent on working in the industry. There’s a pretty strong likelihood that you’ll find yourself deep in the throes of a speculative screenplay at least a handful of times or more. What is a Spec Script?

The term “spec script” comes up frequently in the industry. Pr perhaps the unabbreviated format of the term which is a speculative screenplay. Especially in reference to a film writer. But, what is a spec script and what does this all even mean?

A spec script is a speculative script that is written for film or television independently of any production entity. The term “spec script” or “writing on spec” is used to describe a filmmaker or screenwriter writing a script without support from a particular agency or outside source.

The spec script is crafted by the writer and it’s done so with the ultimate goal of selling the script or securing representation for future assignments through the spec. Each year, The Black List ranks all of the best spec scripts that are written by film writers. 

Why Do Film Writers Write a Script on Spec?

As you look to further answer the question, “What is a spec script?” It makes most sense to explain also why writers or filmmakers would write a script on spec.

The purpose of spec’ing a script or writing on spec is to:

So, what is a spec script? It’s a speculative screenplay that is written without a producer or representative in mind, but with the intention of showcasing a screenwriter’s ideas, through story.

Spec scripts may be written on speculation of sale, thus with the screenwriter’s interest in potentially selling it to a film producer or company – one day.
