What It's Like Filming in New York
Filming in New York gives you one of the most recognized backdrops on earth, along with some of the toughest logistics. Lower Manhattan’s skyline, the cast-iron blocks of SoHo, the brownstones of Park Slope, and the industrial waterfront of Greenpoint each bring a distinct look and a distinct set of rules.
Not every public shoot needs a permit. A MOME permit is generally required when a production requests parking privileges, stages non-handheld equipment on city property, asserts exclusive use of public space, or involves regulated activity such as traffic control or prop weapons. We coordinate the applicable permit, insurance, parking, and agency requirements when needed.
Local Filming Tips (Save Your Crew Time)
| TOPIC | QUICK ADVICE |
|---|---|
| Permits | Apply through the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME). A permit is generally required when a production requests parking, stages non-handheld equipment on city property, or asserts exclusive use of public space. MOME charges a $500 application fee for each 14-day period, while required NYPD Movie/TV Unit assistance is provided at no charge. |
| Weather | Winters bring cold, wind, and snow that can shut down exteriors fast; summers run hot and humid with afternoon storms. Build weather days into the schedule from December through March and keep rain covers on hand year-round. |
| Parking | Request essential production-vehicle parking through the MOME permit application and post the required notices before filming. Metered and residential blocks fill quickly, so plan truck and van parking early. |
| Sound | Subway rumble, traffic, sirens, and construction are constant in Manhattan. Scout interiors with solid windows for dialogue, and schedule sensitive audio away from rush-hour street noise. |

Mastercard Hudson Yards Summer Concert Series
Beverly Boy Productions partnered with Octagon to produce a two-part event documentary for Mastercard’s Hudson Yards Summer Concert Series in New York. We captured the energy and atmosphere of the series across four shoot dates through the summer, then turned it into fast-paced sizzle reels built for attendees and event stakeholders.
A two-person crew shot the series in 4K with gimbal and tripod coverage plus professional photography, and we delivered two edited 30 to 60 second sizzle reels with text graphics for Part 1 and Part 2.

P.S. 329 Surfside Promotional Video
Beverly Boy Productions produced a promotional video for P.S. 329 Surfside in Brooklyn, creating a polished 2 to 3 minute piece that presents the school’s environment, story, and community through interviews, b-roll, voiceover, music, and graphics.
We ran a full-day shoot at the school with a Director of Photography and assistant, two 4K cameras, interview lighting, wireless lav and boom audio, and a gimbal for smooth b-roll through classrooms and hallways. Pre-production covered scheduling, scripting, and coordination so the day stayed organized around the school’s schedule.

FAQs About Hiring a Videographer in New York
How much does a videographer cost in New York?
What types of videos do your New York crews film most often?
Our New York crews commonly film corporate and finance content in Midtown and the Financial District, brand and fashion films in SoHo and Tribeca, and product launches and conference coverage near the Javits Center. We also support social content in Williamsburg and founder interviews across Brooklyn.
Do New York videographers charge by the hour or by the day?
Most professional New York videographers quote half-day, full-day, or complete project rates rather than a simple hourly fee. A project quote may include pre-production, crew, cameras, lighting, audio, insurance, location logistics, editing, and final delivery. Hourly charges are more common for overtime, editing, or other isolated services, so compare the complete production scope instead of the labor rate alone.
How far in advance should I book?
Can you handle filming permits?
Yes. We coordinate MOME film permit applications, production parking requests, Certificates of Insurance, and applicable agency or property requirements when a permit is needed. MOME currently charges a $500 application fee for each 14-day permit period, which we list separately in your estimate.
Do you offer both ground and drone filming?
Yes. Our ground crews use professional Sony, RED, and ARRI camera systems. Drone filming is available with FAA Part 107 pilots when the location and airspace allow it. New York City also requires an NYPD/DOT permit for takeoff and landing within the city.
What should I budget extra for when filming in New York?
Will AI replace professional videographers?
AI can make transcription, captioning, rough editing, and other post-production tasks faster, but it cannot replace on-location directing, lighting, professional audio capture, interviews, or live-event judgment. New York productions also require experienced crews who can respond to venue restrictions, street noise, tight schedules, and changing conditions.
