Various film theories, or the study of films and filmmaking, have been introduced over the past 100 years. With early film theory focusing solely on the argument that film was, in fact, an art that could be studied. And later film theory focusing on things like feminism, individual film concepts, and the psyche. One such theory that has evolved is the auteur theory of film directing. But what is the auteur theory of film directing? And what does it mean?
Auteur Theory of Film Directing
The auteur theory of film directing states that films that are directed by the same director will have underlying elements that represent visual cues or clues as to who directed the film.
For example, the auteur theory argues that a film that is produced by Quentin Tarantino is going to have specific elements. Such as a specific vision or distinct form that will play out in every film that this individual directs.
A Unique Style
You can think of auteur theory as the director’s own unique “style.” In fact, it really can be that simple. Auteur theory of film directing basically means that the director of the film is the author. And that the film is the reflection of the director’s artistic vision.
If you were to give the same script to two different directors to lead, would the movie be the same? Of course not! The Narrative may be the same, the actors may say the same lines. But the way the film is directed will be completely different.
This is because each director has his or her own visual queues, underlying artistic talents and vision, and backgrounds. Which all play out in their ability to direct the film.
Obsessions & Distinctions
You might not realize…But the auteur theory of film directing is essentially looking deeply into the obsessions and distinctions. That show up repeatedly in films that are produced by a single Director.
These are often directly relative to the personality of the Director. Or are otherwise somehow connected to them in their past experiences and emotions.
Watch any bulk of films directed by a famous director. Such as Scorsese, or Burton, or Spielberg. And you’re going to find a unique style about each that is close only to that Director.
The Very Definition
This is auteur film theory! In fact, many of these directors have such a noticeable style that you could call out one of their films in a heartbeat.
Thus, the auteur theory of film directing focuses on the underlying visual cues and elements that carry forth in each film that a particular Director is involved in and the resulting connections or relationships in the art form that they create.
