Learning about the impact that feminism has had on film narratives is important. Especially as we face a fourth wave of feminism. How did the evolution of feminism in TV and film change associated narratives in the films produced during these impactful times?

Feminism in TV & Film

Feminism has been a subject in television and film for many years now. As women continue to be marginalized for choices that they make and they are overshadowed throughout the workplace. The film industry has equally been impacted by these movements towards equality.

Women have most notably been seen making infinitely brilliant introductions into recent productions. With the most recent bout of feminism being largely behind increases in female led films and productions.

But recall that feminism is more than just having a female role or a strong female lead in a film. The film must equally impart a sense of question or consideration among the audience.

As they wonder how feminism or lack of female rights impacts equality in politics, society, and economics.

Women in Higher Demand

We’re seeing women in higher demand in the film industry. With not only more active female roles. But greater demand on television for female leads, too.

Again, while demand for women to work the industry is not in itself a sign of feminism in film. Empowering women to work equally in the industry as men do. And providing them with equal rights certainly IS feminist!

Balanced Roles

As demand shifts, and emerging female forces are recognized. Some question whether feminism should be brought up so heavily. Or if a natural transition to increasing the female role and ability in the field is instead possible?

While it’s clear that many industries still have a very long way to go in showcasing women for the equal individuals that they are. It’s increasingly becoming common to see female characters featured in equal roles in film and within the film industry.

It would appear that the evolution of feminism in TV and film has definitely changed film narratives. With more balanced roles being respected throughout the industry. These points may, or may not continue as the fourth wave of feminism comes to a close. Or will it?
