The term “sword and sorcery” was defined by an American author, Fritz Leiber, and dates back to 1961. It was used in a response to a British author of the time. Who was seeking a name or underlying theme description for a book written by Robert E. Howard.
While “epic fantasy” was the first coined idea for such stories, sword and sorcery would come up shortly after. And, ultimately, would become the recognized catchphrase for stories that depicted the use of supernatural elements.

Characteristics of Sword and Sorcery Films
It is said that sword and sorcery films are the ancestors of swashbucklers, specifically referencing fictional tales of The Three Musketeers and possibly also Robin Hood.
