A Simple Axis of Action Film Definition

In filmmaking, terminology can be some of the hardest to follow. Because there’s just so many new terms and rules to understand! If you’re an aspiring filmmaker that is just starting out? You’re probably hearing all different terms that are making your mind swirl with both excitement and a little bit of apprehension. For example, you might have heard the term axis of action. But do you know what it means? This simple axis of action film definition will help you make sense of it all.

What is Axis of Action?

The simplest axis of action film definition essentially states that the axis of action is a continuity editing action that represents the imaginary line. Which passes from left to right through the main actors. And which defines the spatial relation of the scene.

When viewing the axis of action, the camera, for continuity purposes, should not break the axis of action or cross the axis at a cut and reverse spatial relations of the scene.

This will ensure that there is constant screen direction. And that there is constant screen space and the continuity of the film will be appropriate.

The axis of action film definition is used mostly on the production set. We rarely use this term outside of production, but if you’re working the set you are likely to hear it frequently as it relates to continuity editing.

The 180 Degree Rule

The axis of action is sometimes more commonly referenced as the 180° line or the 180 degree rule. What this states is that there is a line, which creates the spatial relations of all elements of the scene, correlating left to right.

The camera is not supposed to cross this invisible line, the axis of action. And thus can operate in 180° on one side. But should never cross.

Sometimes the axis of action is crossed. Also called crossing the line or breaking the line. In continuity editing, breaking the line is the result of taking a new, reverse angle shot that comes from across the axis of action.

The Emotional Connection

Filmmakers that understand the rules of the axis of action film definition. And how breaking the line can be used to build upon the emotional strength. Or break the emotions of the scene down, have unique power in connecting with the audience in ways they never could before.

Emotional engagement between the audience and the film is directly tied to the axis of action. And, thus, when the camera is close to the axis, the emotions can run incredibly high.
