Production Assistant Clothing and What NOT to Wear when Working on the Set

Production Assistants frequently wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing that allows them to move freely and functionally around the set. They’ll probably have on a pair of sunglasses most of the time if working outside, and they are likely to be seen in articles that allow for comfort over style. Knowing what production assistants wear when working on the set is important, especially if you’re seeking a role as production assistant and wondering what you should (or should not) wear on the job. check out this guide to production assistant clothing, and what NOT to wear when working on the film set.

Comfort Over Style

Working the film set is a busy job that requires a lot of movement in various elements. It may be snowing one day, raining the next, and you may be on set in Florida where it could reach 100° the next day. It’s important to consider your comfort over your style!

Seasoned production assistants wear whatever they can be more comfortable in while safely performing the variety of tasks that they are faced with each day. Layers are common, because they allow for adjustments to the internal temperature should the day warm up, or cool off, quickly while working on the set.

Hiking or outdoor style clothes are very common for those working as production assistants. A 14 hour day on set will almost certainly require some adjustments!

So make sure that as you’re planning your production assistant clothing options, you’re thinking about how the temperatures will vary throughout the early morning, late night, and everywhere in between.

Protection

Production assistant clothing should protect you from the elements. That means you’re going to need sunglasses and hats in the summer to reduce the impact of the sun on your face and eyes while working the set. Wearing sunscreen in the summer and anytime filming outdoors, is equally important!

Light clothing in the summer months is fine, but it’s important for the material to be durable. Cargo pants can whisk away heat more quickly than things like skinny jeans and leggings. Likewise, shirts that can whisk away sweat and moisture are ideal so consider things like DryFit and Polyester and avoid cotton!

Waterproof Options

In addition to protecting from the sun, production assistant clothing must frequently protect the individual from water and rain.

Just because it downpours suddenly does not mean that the shoot will stop or that the schedule for the day will change! There will be times when you’ve got to be out on the set working in elements like rain or torrential downpours.

Bring a quick drying jacket, or a waterproof jacket for these times. Again, wearing clothes that whisk away moisture can help on rainy days because they allow for quicker dry time in between downpours or situations that cause moisture.

Shoes

Finally, last but not least when discussing production assistant clothing, we’ve got to talk about what’s on your feet all day. Your shoes will play a key role in how your day goes.

Comfortable shoes that allow you to get to and front various areas of the set with ease are certainly going to be better than something that’s difficult to wear or uncomfortable.

Looking for comfortable shoes, tennis shoes or running shoes are ideal. You want a shoe that is going to feel good when you walk well over 10K steps each day and you want to know that your foot is protected.

As you’re thinking about production assistant clothing, and what NOT to wear, avoid open toed shoes or heels. Neither will make for a good day on the set!
