Step 1: The Plan!

Before you can even think about producing a corporate training series that your employees will appreciate and find useful, you’ve got to determine where their needs are. Assessing the needs of your team to determine the most suitable learning goals and objectives for your training material is the very first step to producing a quality training video. This requires some introspection and a bit of thought as you analyze your teams’ strengths and weaknesses. Think about what training is most essential: Is it safety training? Software training? Customer Service? Something else?

Step 2:  Consider Your Adult Audience

Producing a corporate training video is not going to be the same as producing an educational video for a young student audience. Adults have specific learning principles that apply to them which don’t necessarily apply to children. Put simply, adults learn a bit different. On top of that, different groups of adults learn differently. For example, a group of doctors will probably have a longer attention span and the desire to read more than a group of fast food workers. They’re just – different.

You need to consider your audience when planning your training videos. You want to resonate with your audience, and you want to be sure that you’re providing a learning experience that will engage them. Adult learners, regardless of age or socioeconomic status, are generally satisfied with a self-directed learning environment, already have some training or experience, likely have their own goals, and are looking for training that is going to be relevant, task-oriented, and specific to their needs. On top of all of this, adult learners want to be treated with respect, so it’s important to provide training that makes them feel respected and not like they’re being talked down to.

Step 3:  Set Goals & Objectives

Setting the goals and objectives that will be covered is an incredibly important part of the process in learning how to make corporate training videos that your employees will find valuable. Think of goals as the top level outcomes or the vision that you have for your employees to achieve when they’re done training. Think of objectives as the individual actions or measurable steps and events that will take place in order for employees to achieve those goals.

Essentially, for each goal, you’ll usually have several objectives. Keep goals specific and break them down so that each goal can become the primary topic/title of a training video that will then have several learning objectives which are addressed to help the employees achieve that learning goal when they’ve finished the training video.

Remember, goals and objectives should directly apply to the individual learning needs of your employees!

Step 4:  Hire a Professional to Produce Your Corporate Training Videos

Once you’ve handled the first several planning steps, you’ll consider hiring a professional to help with the production of your corporate training videos. At this point, you’ve handled several of the pre-production steps, but a professional crew can help you with the next phase of pre-production which is to write the script and then to prepare a storyboard and shot list that outlines how your video will be filmed, what shots and transitions will be involved, and the actions to occur in each sequence. All of this, and the next steps that come, are technical and not necessarily for someone without filmmaking experience to take on.
