Understanding Essential Camera Crew Equipment

So you want to make a movie or short film? You’re on a tight budget, and you know there are certain forms of camera crew equipment that you absolutely must have and others that are really not a dire need — but which is which?

We’re helping you to understand the most essential camera crew equipment needs, what you can’t live without, and what you absolutely can. Budget friendly or not, you’re about to get serious about filmmaking!

1. A Camera

You can’t shoot any form of film without a camera. So, this is an absolute must in terms of essential camera crew equipment. However, you don’t necessarily need high value cameras.

You can start shooting a film with a basic mirrorless camera or DSLR. These pieces of equipment can get expensive, but there are beginner versions that are well under $500.

Along with your camera you’ll need the following:

  • Lenses
  •
  • Batteries
  •
  • Tripod or other support

2. Sound Equipment

Sound Assistant

What kind of audio do you intend to capture for your film? Sound equipment is essential camera crew equipment that you absolutely cannot afford NOT to have.

But, it doesn’t mean you need to go over the top in purchasing microphones or other sound recording devices.

Capturing great audio can be accomplished with:

  • Lavalier Microphones
  •
  • Directional Microphones
  •
  • Headphones
  •
  • Audio Recorder

3. Additional Camera Support

Depending on how you will be filming, you’ll need various forms of camera support equipment for your crew. A tripod is essential camera crew equipment, but you may consider other forms of support as well.

Options to help you keep your camera stable and steady while you shoot include a monopod, fluid head tripods, and sliders. For advanced camera operators, you should consider adding gimbal stabilizers and jibs to your arsenal of equipment.

4. Lighting

You’ve got to be able to fully control the lighting in order to capture the best footage for your filmmaking. Lighting sets are commonly purchased by aspiring filmmakers and recognized as essential camera crew equipment.

Basic lighting includes things like LED Panels and Lamps. More advanced lighting setups may include reflectors and other setups such as CFL softbox lights and various reflector options of shapes and sizes.

5. Post Production Equipment

If you’re going to produce videos, you’re going to need several editing or post production essentials. Equipment for post production generally includes a computer, storage device, and software.

The greatest expense here, really, is in the software. High tech film editing software can be very expensive and may require monthly investments. Several fee options exist depending on what you’re trying to do.

Of course, if this all sounds like too much to invest in, call Beverly Boy Productions and hire a film crew to help you out! There’s far less investment, tons of time saved, and you get a pro to do the work for you — it’s a sure win!
