1. Plan Your Segment Script

The first order of operations when it comes to producing culinary segments is to write your script. If you intend to produce several segments, such as a series, you’ll want to have a specific niche that your series focuses on.

This way each video relates in some capacity and your audience will know what theme to expect.

The script will represent about 1 minute per page. So, if you want a 30 minute segment, prepare a script that is close to 30 pages in total length.

2. Prepare Equipment List

The equipment that you need to produce a culinary segment will depend largely on the size of your crew, and the budget that you’ve got to work with.

A professional production crew will bring all of the essential equipment to the production location, but if you’re attempting to produce a culinary segment on your own, consider the following:

  • You should have at least 3 cameras. 1 for close up shots. 1 for mid-range view. 1 for overhead or for capturing the movement.
  •
  • You’ll need lapel microphones to capture the chef’s voice.
  •
  • Consider your lighting needs based on the kitchen studio – this will vary depending on where you’re shooting.

3. Shoot the Segment

Producing culinary segments is largely about the planning, but the shoot is where the segment comes to life. This is where your ideas and all the planning you did up to this point come together.

During production, the crew will capture all of the important shots and scenes involved in your segment.

Expect this to take a full-day. Most culinary segments require up to 12 hours of shoot time, depending on the intricacies of the shots and the size of the crew that is filming as well as various other elements.

Hair and makeup will be involved as well as a food artist that will make sure everything looks just right for the end result.

4. Post Production Editing

Post-production editing of your culinary segment is a long process that involves a lot of interaction between the film editor and the crew. Be prepared to interact back and forth as you provide feedback on the production and what you love about the final cut.

You’ll probably have just a few days to provide feedback when edits are rendered, so make sure you’re prepared to be heavily involved at this time.

During editing, voice overs, narration, and other steps are included. Graphics and special effects are also added in at this time. When it’s all done, your culinary show will be prepared for distribution.

5. Distribution

The final stage of producing culinary segments is the distribution. This is the point where your segment is ready for the viewing audience.

Before distribution, promotional marketing steps can come into play so that you can build up audience urgency and desire to watch the segment.

Depending on how you will distribute your segment, the editor will deliver the final files prepared for the next steps. It’s all part of the process of producing culinary segments.
