What is a “Runner” on Film Sets?

Film sets are full of working crew members that have various roles and responsibilities. Throughout the typical production you’ll find runners, cinematographers, the Director, and many other working crew members actively engaging in their responsibilities on the set and behind-the-scenes of the production. But, exactly what is a runner on film sets? And what does the runner do?

What is a Runner on Film Sets?

A production runner, sometimes called the production assistant, or just a “runner” acts as the hands and feet of the production crew. They’re poised with the responsibility of making sure that everyone on the set has what they need.

Basically, the “runner” is the one who runs around to deliver paperwork, lunches, coffee, and other supplies to those working on the set.

Much of the runner’s job is clerical in nature. They copy call sheets and sides, they make copies of scripts and they will usually be found running paperwork between crew members and others on the set. Whether you’re an actor on set, an extra, or someone that’s just there for the day.

You’re almost certain to come across the runner. Because they will likely have paperwork to give to you. And may require your signature on release forms or other items.

What Else Does a Runner Do on Set?

Runners are generally responsible for the lunch or breakfast orders on set, too. They’ll come around to take details from the cast and crew.

To make sure they order the food or drinks that everyone wants. When the food arrives on set, the runner will make sure that everyone has what they need.

Running Errands

It’s very common for the runner to “run errands” for the cast and crew too. Thus, they may make trips to the post office. Or to a local supply store to pick up things that are needed on the set. Like snacks, supplies, or other needs.

Sometimes the runner will book travel accommodations for crew members. In fact, they are often responsible for a variety of tasks relative to the coordination of travel to and from the set for major cast and crew members.

You might receive emails or phone calls from the runner in advance of your call day and time, as they are verifying schedules and making sure everything is in order for the upcoming shoot day.

Always Something to Do

Runners are the legs and hands of the crew. Taking on just about any responsibilities or administrative duties that are handed to them. And that means, they’ve got a lot to do! Runners are commonly poised with a laundry list of tasks, and they stay incredibly busy throughout the day. 

While this is an entry level role, it’s one that many aspiring filmmakers will take on. Because they know it provides them with a direct connection to a learning opportunity that will afford them great experience on the film set and could lead to future roles in the film industry.

So, what is a runner on film sets? It’s the person that runs around, performing a variety of duties including administrative, clerical, and hands-on errands for the cast and crew to ensure production tasks remain on time and on target.
