Essentially, this is a list of the must have case study video shoot equipment and gear that we find to be incredibly important to the outcome of our case study shoots, and that we think is important for you to have. Of course, it’s by no means an exhaustive list of gear, but rather a list of what we believe is important if you want to shoot on location and you don’t want to get tied up in hauling around a bunch of added gear that you really don’t need.

Two decades of experience has helped us to grasp a pretty solid understanding of how to pack our gear and to do so lightly, so that we’re prepared for the job without being weighed down. So, here’s what you need to have if you’re going to produce a case study video of your own.

At Least Two Cameras

Ideally, you’re going to have three cameras, but if you only have two that will work out just fine. A variety of different types of cameras exist, but for the purpose of producing a case study video, you’re going to need something that is high definition, and either DSLR or mirrorless. A professional quality camera is going to give more professional footage than something like a smartphone or similar device.

Batteries

You’re going to need batteries for your cameras, your lighting equipment (if it’s not operated by another power source), and for any other gear such as your camera gimbals, microphones, or anything else that you decide to bring with you to the shoot. Not only should you have batteries for all of your case study video shoot equipment, but you should have a backup set of batteries for all equipment and gear too.

In addition to bringing your batteries with you to the shoot, you should make sure that your batteries are charged up and ready to go. You should probably also bring your battery chargers with you, just in case you run low on power or you find that you overlooked charging a battery before you left. It’s quite common to get on set and to realize after the fact that you forgot to charact the batteries for your gear.

Microphones

Cameras often have microphones or audio capture internally but they are notorious for capturing poor audio quality. Since you’re be filming interviews for your case study video, capturing high quality audio is going to be absolutely essential. You’ll want to bring microphones with you and make sure that you’ve got a variety of different types of mics including:

  • Shotgun mics
  • Lavalier mics
  • Condenser mics

Choosing the most appropriate microphones for your filming needs is essential to picking up the audio in a crisp, clear, and professional manner.

Lighting

Even if you’re filming outside, it is important not to overlook the value of additional lighting on set. We understand the importance of traveling lightly, but lighting is something you really can’t back out on when it comes time to pack up your case study video shoot equipment. Make sure that you have:

  • A ring light
  • Tabletop studio lights
  • A 3-point light setup that includes key, fill, and backlight

Depending on where the shoot is and what natural lighting may be available, these are bare minimum essentials to bring with you for your interviews.

Additional Gear

In addition to the gear that we’ve listed, your case study video shoot equipment may vary based on the location you’ll be filming at, the shots you have planned, and any b-roll that you intend to film. If you’ll be filming overhead or aerial footage for your b-roll, a drone might be necessary to provide you with the right look.

You will most likely need a tripod (or two) for filming interviews, and you should have a gimbal (even if it’s a small handheld gimbal) that you can use to stabilize your shots. A backdrop of some kind will also be essential for filming interviews on location as you might find it challenging to find a space that isn’t too busy for your audience.

Packing this gear, and any essential case study video shoot equipment that you intend to bring for your bit shoot day is a process that you should plan ahead for, too. Take your time, make a checklist, and be sure that you’ve double checked to be sure you’ve go everything that you need.
