If you’re considering hiring a video production company to help you create content for your business or for some other need, make sure that you’re asking the right questions to get to know who you’re about to start working with.
These questions to ask before you hire a video production company not only help you to hammer down the right agency for the job, but will also help you to determine who’s best to work with before you actually start working. Ask these questions and then hire a video production crew that’s right for you.
What is your working process when you take on a project?
This question will be vital to helping you understand whether their process is even acceptable to you as a means of taking a project on. If the video production company states that they don’t have a method of getting started or that they really don’t have a process.
That’s a red flag to run in the other direction! Likewise, if they say that their process is inflexible or that they tend to have a single, one-size-fits-all approach that they use, you need to turn the other way.
You want a company that will be flexible as needed, has a process that works for them to get started, and is willing to work together to define a plan that works for both you and their team.
You also want to know that they have a team lead or captain that you can talk to about this process throughout the project. Anything less would be concerning.
How is the success of a project measured?
The video production company doesn’t necessarily need to know how YOU will measure the success of your video, but they should have an idea of how they will measure the success of the relationship between you and them.
Listen closely to their answer as you determine whether their determination of a successful working relationship aligns with what you would find to be successful. If not–now is a good time to move on to other opportunities.
What is your favorite project and why was it so special?
You certainly don’t want to even consider working with a creative company that doesn’t have at least one past favorite project that they have a passion for. If they don’t have anything to talk about here, it’s probably a good idea to search somewhere else for a video production company.
Likewise, if their favorite project is something that you find to be poorly produced, you may also want to consider other options.
Now is the time to check into their work, determine whether their work success aligns with what you’re looking for, and get to know what it is they can deliver from a creative point of view.
Who is your longest working client relationship?
You may not need to know exactly who, but you certainly need to know how long they have worked together. If a potential video production company that you want to hire hasn’t stayed working with a brand for more than a couple of months you should be concerned.
Great video production crews tend to have long term client relationships and several of them. If you want to find a crew that will be comfortable working with you for the long haul, this question is a must!
How do you approach the services you provide to me as a client?
This is where they should detail their working process as it relates to your project. Will they only be available a certain day of the week? Are they only available certain hours?
Is there a set “72-hour” response time or some other way that they handle communication? Is there some kind of white-glove communication rule in which they have a client manager work with you regularly and you have little interaction with them directly?
Make sure you understand the process and what to expect, and that you’re prepared to accept this if you decide to work together. It’s very difficult to get a video production company to change their processes just because you aren’t happy!
