The off-screen actor remains in the frame of the over-the-shoulder shot such that the audience understands fully where each actor is in relation to the scene.
Emotionally, the over the shoulder shot can be used to remind the viewer that there is a relation between the characters in the scene. The viewer will feel like they are present in the character’s state of mind and as if they are there, with the character, thinking alongside them.
Establish a Connection
Characters that are framed within the shot together appear to have a connection, even subconsciously, the viewer will feel that there is a connection. Characters that are isolated or shown in the frame alone, will seem like they are not connected to each other in the story.
