Step 1: Choose the Narrator

The first step to preparing a product review video shoot is to set up the scene. Make sure you have a qualified speaker to narrate the film. Although the product is the main subject of the shoot, the individual that does all the talking will also play a core role.

The narrative will guide the shoot in a logical manner and must keep viewers engaged. You certainly don’t want someone with a monotone voice narrating the entire shoot!

Step 2: Determine Shoot Location

Where you shoot the product review video will be largely dependent on individual interest and the product itself. A studio is ideal for all products as this ensures pristine audio and the ability to focus solely on the product without any distractions.

However, outdoor products such as sporting goods can be filmed outside in a location that is calm and quiet. You want to make sure there is not a lot going on to distract the viewer from the important subject of the film–the product you are reviewing.

Step 3: Prepare Camera Setup

As you prepare for the shoot, consider using two cameras to capture the scene from several angles. The primary camera with a medium shot will be the core of the footage. In lower budget product review shoots, a single camera with a waist-up view is sufficient.

If you have the luxury of two cameras, the second should be angled from a side view to provide an alternate visual of the product and subject that is reviewing the product.

Step 4: Consider Other Shots

Shooting a product review video in full detail will help viewers understand all there is to know about your product and why they should purchase it.

As you shoot the video footage, consider additional shots that could be taken after the review to build suspense or further engage your audience. Capture B-roll footage that can be used when the narration is rather long or when switching shot angles.

Footage that shows the product being used provides an added level of interest for viewers. Consider B-roll footage of the product in use to grab your audience’s attention and show them what the product actually does.
