What is the Type of Technology Embedded to Film to Prevent Copyright Infringement?

The protection of copyrighted films is certainly an important topic for filmmakers that have introduced these films on DVD and other forms of video. 20 years ago, protections for copyrighted materials might have been rather limited, as they were not nearly as important to the industry, but pirating copyrighted content caused extreme challenges for creators and the rise of the internet and digital content would only make matters worse. Fortunately, steps to combat the problem using a type of technology embedded to film to prevent copyright infringement have proven quite valuable.

But exactly what is this technology?

Encryption in Films

The type of technology embedded to film to prevent copyright infringement is called encryption. The early uses of encryption algorithms were called Content Scrambling Systems (CSS). Which would be employed onto a DVD.

To prevent others from being able to reproduce the content. Or otherwise take the content from the DVD and reuse it. DVD manufacturers are necessary to license the CSS encryption technology. So that their units could decrypt encrypted content and play it.

The use of encryption helps to restrict the potential bypassing of software that would otherwise modify or reuse content from the DVD. In addition to encryption, there’s the imposition of tracking technology onto copyrighted works to prevent infringement.

Digital Rights Management

Digital Rights Management is another form of technology in use to prevent copyright infringement. Also, Digital Rights Management (DRM) actually includes a variety of technological protection measures.

That include controlling technologies for restricting access or use of proprietary hardware and copyrighted works. DRM techniques include things like restrictive licensing agreements which limit access to consumers.

Many of the forms of protection that are said to prevent copyright infringement are covered by DRM.

Watermarking

Watermarking is another type of technology that is used to prevent film copyright infringement. Digital watermarks are a type of technology embed into film to prevent copyright infringement during production or distribution.

The watermark records the copyright owner, distribution chain, or purchaser of the music or video. Although watermarking is not a complete for of DRM. It represents one of several means of embedding technology to prevent or limit copyright infringement.

The primary type of technology embedded to film to prevent copyright infringement is the use of encryption technology and the watermark which together work to prevent the unlicensed use of copyrighted films without permission.

These technologies and others continue to evolve as a means of providing additional protections against pirating. And other instances of reproducing film technology without permission from the original copyright owner.
