Understanding the TV Advertising Production Process
If you’ve ever been on a film set you know that there are a lot of working hands that go into producing the magic that you see on the screen. The TV advertising production process is really no different than producing a full-feature film, with the exception of probably a few movie stars and a few less working crew members.

Here’s what a typical day in the TV advertising production process is going to look like on the set:
Arriving on Set
Before production begins, everyone must arrive on the set. Cast and crew are provided call times that represent when they should arrive and when they will be required to work the set. Sign-in sheets, startup packages, and other materials will be provided depending on whether you’re arriving to act, or to work, the set.
Time is Money!
The call time that is provided represents the time that you should start work. Cast and crew should always prepare to arrive earlier than their scheduled call time and should leave room for potential traffic or other problems so that they are not late. Being late costs money!
Dressing for the Job
You might notice that everyone on the TV advertising production set is dressed in dark colors–that’s so that their clothing doesn’t distract the cast or potentially reflect any lighting from the set. Most of the crew will be dressed casually so that they can work–there will be a lot of movement, running around in a fast paced environment. Sneakers are likely appropriate!
Rehearsals
The TV advertising production process will block time out for rehearsals. This is when the crew responsible for electric and lighting will begin to operate alongside the appropriate cast. Rehearsal time is work–just because cameras may not be rolling does not mean that everyone’s time on set is not money. Be respectful of the time that is being spent here.
Shooting
As soon as “Quiet Please” is heard on the set, the action is going to start! This is where the director, actors, camera crew, and sound crew must be hyper-focused on the production. Shooting will take a lot of back and forth. The Director or AD will call the shots.
The Magic is Happening
At this point, all cast and crew should be in the appropriate place and ready for the shoot. Remember, there is only so much time for each scene and shot to be captured and we’re looking for the absolute best. Do your part to ensure the professional end product is captured!
