New York City Short Film Festival Guide for Filmmakers
Each year, the New York City Short Film Festival attracts filmmakers from around the world as well as aspiring artists that are interested in filmmaking. Representing the largest NYC festival for short films, and attracting professionals to the Big Apple for a week of short film entertainment and fun, The New York City Short Film Festival has taken place for 17 years and continues to attract participants and spectators alike.

NYC Short Film Festival Categories
The short films that are submitted to the New York City Short Film Festival can be entered into one of seven categories. These categories include:
- Drama Short
- Animation Short
- LGBT Short
- Comedy Short
- Foreign Language Short
- Student Short
- Documentary Short
Over the years, short films have been screened from around the world at this NYC film festival. Winning selections have frequently gone on to be screened at major film festivals including The Sundance Festival, The Clermont-Ferrand Festival, and the Berlin Film Festival as well as many other filmmaking events and film screenings.
Submitting to the New York City Short Film Festival
Submissions to the New York Short Film Festival are accepted online via the Film Freeway. Submission rules can vary from year-to-year, but currently are as follows:
- Short film submissions cannot be more than 50 minutes.
- Only digital film submissions are accepted.
- Press materials and additional information may be submitted with your submission via email to [email protected]
Films that are submitted generally must be in English unless they are submitted in the Foreign Language Short category.
Additionally, films that are submitted to the New York City Shorts festival will be held in the library permanently unless you do not wish the film to be retained in which you can notify the festival operations in writing.
New York City Short Film Festival Awards
Various awards and prizes are provided to entrants that win within the several submission categories. The “Best of” award is provided for each category.
