The fantasy film genre is one that can be recognized by a mix of characters. Often heroic, and generally epic adventures. When it comes to the subgenre of fantasy films? Sword and sorcery films are represented by many similar characteristics that you might recall from fantasy. As well as a unique set of characteristics all its own. Sword and sorcery films represent a subgenre of fantasy films. In which there is an underlying element of romance, plenty of sword-wielding heroes, and epic but equally violent adventure.

What are Sword and Sorcery Films?

Sword and sorcery films represent a subgenre of fantasy films in which heroes typically engage in personal battles that most definitely involve the use of a sword, and quite possibly also some epic sorcery, too.

The term “sword and sorcery” was defined by an American author, Fritz Leiber, and dates back to 1961.  It was used in a response to a British author of the time. Who was seeking a name or underlying theme description for a book written by Robert E. Howard.

While “epic fantasy” was the first coined idea for such stories, sword and sorcery would come up shortly after. And, ultimately, would become the recognized catchphrase for stories that depicted the use of supernatural elements.

In addition to swords which backed their consistent squabbles which were often rooted in romance.

Characteristics of Sword and Sorcery Films

It is said that sword and sorcery films are the ancestors of swashbucklers, specifically referencing fictional tales of The Three Musketeers and possibly also Robin Hood.

Quite similar characteristically, swashbucklers are not defined by their swords. Although many of their heroes did in fact use swords to fight. The way you would almost exclusively expect a sword to be involved in a “sword and sorcery” film. 

These films have the following characteristics:
