What Does Call Time Mean?

Understanding industry jargon is important for those entering the film industry or any other competitive industry for the matter. Film production is full of industry jargon and terminology that can be challenging to understand for a newcomer, but you’ll still be expected to know it.

For example, what does call time mean in film? Sometimes referred to as “calltime” or “Call time” this is the time that is set for the cast and crew to be on set, ready for the task at hand — filming!

Defining Call Time

The definition of call time in film is, “the time that is set in advance for the cast and crew involved in a production to be on set and prepared to work.”

The call time for film can vary for various members of the cast and crew. For example, the actors will have a call time that is slightly later than the crew members. This allows the crew to prepare for the shoot prior to the actors showing up. This way, everything is ready to go and the cast and crew will stay on schedule to get the work for the day accomplished.

When is Call Time on Set?

call time

Call times are generally set well in advance of the shoot. This way, each individual involved can plan accordingly. The goal of setting call times in film is to save resources and minimize any risks involved in the production not going as planned. Paying for actors, talent, cast, crew, and the various hands involved in film production can be extremely costly. A missed call time, or inappropriately planned for call time, can result in a lot of wasted budget — for this reason, call times are set well ahead of time.

The assistant director and production coordinators will be clearly informed of the call time. Additionally, as the shoot nears, other important members of the head departments will be informed of the call time. Again, the goal is for an efficient production that does not lead to any wasted time in shooting, setup, or finalizing the production for the day.

Why is Call Time Important?

How much does it cost

Call time is vital to the timely production of the film. It’s also important that you look at your call sheet closely and keep yourself well informed of the call time. This way, there are no missed call times.

As a good rule of thumb, you should check your call sheet three times to make sure that you are aware of your call time. This document lists everything that you must know about the production. Make sure that you also check your email prior to going to bed the night before a shoot — this way you will have the final call sheet and know for sure that your call time is set. Changes are not made after the call sheet is emailed.
