What are they for?

Talking head videos are commonly used throughout marketing and communications to deliver interview-style presentations that audiences can relate with.

Talking head video production includes the planning, filming, and editing of these interview-style videos that include a top-up view of the speaker, sometimes referred to as talking heads, in which the audience can clearly see the presenter as he or she delivers the desired speech.

While talking head videos are relatively simple to produce, there are a lot of behind-the-scenes techniques and tactics that go into professional talking head video production.

A talking head video is essentially an interview video that uses subject matter experts to deliver key topics or details from a top-up view in which the audience sees primarily the head of the speaker as he or she talks. Talking head videos may not seem all that interesting in terms of how they are created.

They don’t require a lot of added graphics or special effects and they use basic camera angles and views, but that doesn’t mean that these videos are not incredibly powerful.

Talking head videos can be used for a variety of purposes including:

  • Corporate shareholder updates or internal employee meetings.
  •
  • Public relations updates.
  •
  • Customer success stories and testimonials.
  •
  • Sales support videos.
  •
  • Product explainer videos.

Interview

Talking head video production includes the start to finish creation of a talking head video and all of the important elements that go into producing these interview-style presentations of the speaker. Much like other types of videos, talking head videos require a lot of planning and behind-the-scenes steps in order to ensure that the footage captured is “just right.”

Pre-Production

During pre-production, the story is determined and the appropriate interviewee is sought. A script is developed and a shot list is created. This is the time for b-roll to be planned as well. The footage will be used to support the story delivered by the presenter in the talking head video.

A lot goes into choosing the individual that will deliver the interview and the individual that will be speaking on camera. It’s important that the individual connects closely with the target audience.

Production

Producing the talking head video will typically include a multi-camera setup in which appropriate lighting and sound equipment will be in place. The interview is usually conducted from behind the camera, with the interviewee in front, but sometimes a talking head video will include shots of both the interviewer and the interviewee.

Post Production

After the interview is conducted, and any b-roll footage is captured to support the story, the footage is sent to the editor. A team will work to splice and sync the talking head footage and b-roll so that the interview provides a seamless presentation that delivers the intended story to the desired audience.
