How to Ask Customers for a Video Testimonial About Your Brand

As a business owner, of course, it’s natural for you to love your brand, but studies have proven that as many as 9 out of 10 people admit that they trust what a customer says about a business more than what the business says about itself. Therefore, what your customers say about your brand is technically more important, and more valuable to prospective customers, than what you have to say about your brand. With customer testimonials being so important, it’s important for business owners to learn How to Ask Customers for a Video Testimonial that represents their business or brand.

The problem is, that many business owners are worried about how to approach their customers with a request. Whether it’s a fear of making the customer do more work than expected, or it’s simply not wanting to be a burden on the client, business owners struggle to balance the importance of asking customers for video testimonials against the true value that comes along with having a valid testimonial video from a past client.

So, how do you ask a customer to create a video testimonial that represents your brand in a positive light? Consider the following.

1. Build a Relationship First

There is a such thing as asking too early and you definitely don’t want to do that! Instead, make sure that you’ve built a relationship with your customer first. You need to know that your customers are loyal, happy with your brand, and potentially a good candidate to share their testimony with the world. Asking too early may make them feel burdened and it could run them off!

The best customers to ask for a video testimonial are those that you have worked with for a while and that you know almost on a personal level. If they’ve been a member or a customer of your brand for a long time, they already know you’re not a “crazy pushy salesy brand that makes odd requests,” so you should be safe to ask for a testimonial.

2. Let the Customer Lead to Conversation

You don’t have to fully wait for the customer to take the lead, but what you’re looking for is a customer who has already left positive feedback for your brand in the form of a written testimonial of some sort. It could be as simple as a five-star review, but ideally, it’s more than just the 5 stars – it should be a more detailed review that proves the customer’s satisfaction with your brand. These are the customers to ask for a video testimonial from.

A customer who already shares their love for your brand will be more likely to accept your request for them to produce a video testimonial. You can even ask them to reiterate their written review, to make things simple.

3. Unless You REALLY Know The Customer, Ask Via Email

You might think that the best way to approach How to Ask Customers for a Video Testimonial would be over the phone or face-to-face in person if you have that ability, but you’re actually wrong. Asking over the phone, or in person, leaves your customers in a predicament where they might feel like they’re being left on the spot to answer without much time to consider or to say “no.”

Instead, allow your customers the courtesy of time and privacy as they ponder your request by asking them for a video testimonial via email. This way they can feel comfortable not responding, saying “no” or otherwise taking their time to think about their response first.

4. Be Honest About the Process Upfront

Don’t make your customer come to you with questions about the process, be honest and upfront about the process ahead of time. Provide the details of the process in your email, so that your customer knows exactly what they are getting themselves into ahead of time. If you’re asking for a 30 second interview that includes a video of them from the waist up, make that clear.

If you provide questions that you would like them to answer for the video, send those in your email so that the customer can get an idea of what you’re requesting. The more you can present the details of the ask upfront, the more comfortable your customer will feel with saying “yes.”

5. Be Careful About Offering Incentives

Many platforms are against providing incentives in return for testimonials, some consider it bribery and some customers may frown on it, too. While you really shouldn’t offer incentives in return for your video testimonial, it is okay to send something to your customer as a thank you after the fact.

As you approach How to Ask Customers for a Video Testimonial about your brand, keep the importance of loyalty in mind, and avoid offering upfront incentives, but don’t refrain from sending a positive thank you after your customer has obliged.
