The Art (and Structure) of a Great Story
Before you can ever think about learning how to make a story video, you’ve got to get back to basics and down to the nitty gritty. You’ve got to recall what you were likely taught many years ago, in early grade school, about telling a story.
Most of us learned that a story has a beginning, middle and end. We also learned that a story has the following essential elements:
- Characters
- Setting
- Plot
- Conflict
- Resolution
Compelling stories are not the result of something that just happened, out of the blue. There are planning and structure steps intertwined in to bring the story to life. So, before you produce a story video, you’ve got to write a great story script and plan the set.
Three Act Story Structure
Many video production professionals agree that following a three act story structure is an excellent way to get started with the format of a captivating story.
While you already have an understanding of how a story works, planning out your story structure helps you to put yourself into the individual role of your character and to see how your characters are directly relevant to your customers.
The three act story structure basically looks like this:
- Act #1: Setup. This is where the story structure is set. The viewer learns who the characters are or what the primary incident is in the story. You’re setting the stage for the rest of the story to be delivered to your audience.
- Act #2: Buildup. This is where the story begins to build up some tension either between characters or in which the incident or problem becomes more pronounced. You’re helping the audience to explore the situation and maybe even some potential solutions.
- Act #3: Conclusion. This is where the central problem of the story is resolved. If a character in the story had a problem, the conclusion provides a solution. If there was a big case build up, this is where the problem is taken care of or when an option is offered to take care of the problem – it may even be your call to action addressing that your audience calls you to solve the problem.
Three Steps on How to Make a Story Video
Now that you know how to prepare your story and essentially how to get started with writing your script, let’s dive into the three major steps of video production that you’ll need to get involved in in order to make a story video. The process basically looks like this:
- Pre-Production Planning. Planning the production generally requires more time than will be involved in the actual production. During pre-production the script is written, the storyboard is created, and the scheduling of talent, set or studio, camera crew, and other essentials are booked.
- Production. This is the process of actually shooting your story. As you learn how to make a story video, you’ll find that production is where the planning and key steps that you took in pre-production come together to bring your story to life on the camera.
- Post-Production. Editing the production footage to finalize your story requires essential improvements to key quality issues with audio, color, visual effects, graphics, and associated sound. This is the final stage of making a story video and it’s when your video will be prepared for distribution.
