Many important steps and processes must take place during commercial post-production to ensure the success of your finished project. Although this is the final stage of production, it’s absolutely vital! In fact, these super important commercial post-production processes must occur in order for your film to be a success.

 1. Footage is Synced Together

A commercial may only be 30 seconds, but the amount of footage that is sent to the editor in post-production may be an hour long. There are takes, re-takes, and unnecessary scenes or errors that just won’t work for the finished project. All of these have to be sorted through, viewed, and later formulated into a succinct file that can be spliced together using various software or professional commercial post-production editing equipment.

2. Re-Shoots

As the editor works through the footage, they may find that certain scenes simply cannot be incorporated into the commercial due to quality. A scene that contains an error, has too much sound in the background, or is otherwise not “just right” will need to be scheduled for a reshoot.

Keep in mind that re-shoots can add to the total commercial post-production processes that must take place in order for your advertisement to be successful. Reshoots also require equipment, lighting, location rental, and crew to be hired once again which together will add to the costs of the commercial.

3. Audio Sync

As the footage comes together and final files have been synced, the next steps in the commercial production process becomes focused on syncing the audio files. This is where the editor will decide where to add in essential audio that will enhance the footage and add quality to the commercial. The goal is to drive connections with the end result.

4. Music Additions

Every great commercial includes music! Whether it’s professionally-produced original music, something catchy that you already know, or something you’ve never heard before–commercial post-production processes that focus on the final inclusion of music files to bring the entire video together are essential. Make sure you’ve got all the appropriate rights to any music that is included or be prepared to pay for any music files you include–both options are acceptable.

5. Additional Processes

Sometimes a great commercial will include various other post-production processes and steps to create a great finished project. Additional commercial post-production processes may include:

  • Adding title and text overlays.
  • Including subtitles.
  • Adding appropriate call-to-action details.
  • Working with a team to perform edits or adjustments before finalizing.
  • Coordinating distribution.
