It All Starts with Professional Equipment

You might think that you can capture a testimonial from a client or customer on passing or with your own camera and microphone, and perhaps you WILL catch the testimony, but the reality is, a professional customer testimonial requires professional equipment.

Caution!

Don’t just point and shoot with your iPhone! If you absolutely MUST DIY the testimonial video, use a tripod and a high-end camera. Take your time, read up on the rule of thirds, framing, and other important creative aspects of video production, and then you can consider producing your video testimonial on your own, but we still don’t recommend it!

Absolutely DO NOT Use a Script

Prospects are seeking to connect with your clients or customers and the testimonials that they share, but they’ll also call out a scam when they see it! There’s nothing worse than a rehearsed or otherwise scripted testimonial (well, except for a testimonial that is completely FAKE!).

It’s okay if your customer needs to think about what he or she will say on camera. It’s also okay if you discuss some of the key points that they want to cover before shooting the video. However, it’s best to structure the testimonial as an interview so that each topic is covered and the customer touches on the most important elements–you can later edit out the interview prompts so that it has more of a general testimonial vibe to it when it’s complete.

What’s Your Why?

This should be the focus as you think about how to create video testimonials for your business. WHY do potential customers that might later watch the video need to hear what your current customer has to say? WHY is your current customer so happy (or unhappy) with the products or services that you offer?

Connect the Dots

Great video testimonials dive right into the pain points that a customer has struggled with and the solution that was provided by your products or services. This is not only how your testimonial video will create a connection between your brand and the viewer, it’s also how the viewer will resonate with what your past customer is saying.

It’s a Small World

People connect with people! And, people are looking to hear about real life solutions that other people have found to problems that are similar to their own.

B-Roll for Emotional Connection

Once you’ve learned how to create video testimonials that share only the true and most humble or realistic customer testimonials of your brand, now it’s time to fill in all the gaps in-between with professional B-roll footage. Think about how you can incorporate visuals of your product or services, your customer using the product or service, and the potential consumer struggle or solution in action. All of this is excellent B-roll and can help the consumer to further connect with your brand.

Consider This

Consider how you can directly target audience emotions. The more you connect with the audience on an emotional level, the more effective your video testimonials will be at delivering increased trust, credibility and compassion for your brand.
