What is Remote Video Production?

Remote video production includes the creation of video content from a remote location outside the studio or set, typically within a customer’s home or office. This footage is then sent to a video production team that will edit and finalize the footage into the desired video format.

In 2020 rapid Coronavirus infections would cause widespread closures of non-essential businesses including film sets and studios. Social distancing restrictions would quickly result in limited exposure to what we all once took for granted, and working from home would become the new “Normal” at least for a little while.

Remote business is booming

During that time, remote video production would become incredibly popular as business owners and producers sought ways to live out the age old saying, “The show must go on.”

Using remote video kits that were typically mailed to clients who would then capture the desired footage and send it back for editing, remote video production became second nature for many.

Filming with Remote Drop Kits

Remote video production includes the planning of off-site filming and the execution or shooting of remote video that will be sent back to a studio for final editing.

Remote video production represented the creation of video content from a remote location, outside the studio or set, typically with equipment that was mailed to the client by the production company.

Sometimes called “Studio in a box” or “Studio Drop Kits” these units included the camera equipment, lighting, and appropriate microphones for the desired style of footage that the client would then capture on his or her own terms.

What happens after

Once the remote footage was captured, the equipment, and the footage, would be sent back to the studio for the next steps of the production process — editing.

During that time, a remote crew would work on finalizing the footage and incorporating any special effects, sounds and music, or b-roll footage to produce the desired final video for distribution.

The Benefit of Going Remote

While remote video production continues to take place, safety standards in most states have allowed for film sets and studios to open back up so that in-person film production can once again take place.

However, we learned a lot from remote video production, and some clients continue to enjoy the use of remote filming techniques as they save time and money associated with distance traveling.

How Remote Video Production Works

camera equipment

Remote video production begins with the plan that the client has to create a video. The production company can assist with this phase of the production by providing a script or shot list if needed.

With the plan in place, the production company sends the client the desired camera kit and equipment so that the appropriate footage can be captured.

The client will then use a virtual client monitor and the associated equipment to capture the desired video content. This may include a variety of shots or types of imagery that will later be incorporated into the final video.

The Post Production Process

When the client has finished capturing the footage they will pack up the remote video production equipment and prepare it to be shipped back to the production company.

When the production company receives the equipment and the remote footage that the client captured, they can begin editing and finalizing.

During editing, a variety of techniques are used to produce the final video that the client ordered.

It varies project-to-project

In some cases, remote video production will involve simply capturing footage with client camera systems or equipment and then sending it into the studio for editing.

While remote video drop kits are available, some clients prefer to capture their footage with their own equipment, or they find that they already have footage that was captured from an event or other program that they simply want to have formatted into a different style or type or video.
