1. Carrboro Film Festival

The Carrboro Film Festival will be held November 15-17, at the Carrboro Arts Center, and offers films, workshops, and networking opportunities. Carrboro is a small neighboring town an hour’s drive from Raleigh, but they have a big heart for film, filmmakers, and fans. Going on ten years now, the festival is a weekend of celebrating the arts in a new-Southern kind of way. This means that they produce films that make you think, laugh, and feel—always with a personal, hospitable touch, but a universal appeal. What’s different about this festival is that they screen films without competition. It’s all for fun and entertainment.

2. Retro Film Series—Carolina Theatre

For classic film lovers who like a smaller, more specific event, you may want to take in the two films that The Durham Arts Council is showing November 8: The Rocketeer, and TRON, both Walt Disney movies in the science fiction genre. This event takes place in Durham and is an hour’s drive from Raleigh. So if you live nearby, come check it out, or, if you’re traveling to the area, make it a part of your holiday travels.

3. The Hayti Heritage Film Festival

This event is all about keeping black heritage alive, whether it be music, literature, dance, or film. If it’s a black heritage film fest you’re looking for, this is one of the Raleigh film festivals you can’t miss. Sponsored by St. Joseph’s Historic Foundation and held in Durham, this fest showcases black filmmakers new and classic before a diverse crowd. Besides film, vendors make available crafts, food, and drink. The event begins locally, but has global reach and importance, as it seeks to maintain and promote African Americans behind and in front of the camera.

4. Full Frame Documentary Film Festival

The 23rd annual event featuring the best documentaries in North Carolina and beyond will take place April 2-5 in Durham. These documentaries uplift, inspire, and inform, and hope to bring together filmmakers and the broader community. After the films are screened, discussions on the subject matter will take place, as documentaries are all about creating dialogue and raising questions/providing answers. This fest has the full support of community leaders and influencers, and the selection of films shown is a group decision—not just the filmmakers’. These documentaries give voice to the residents of the area, which resonates with people around the world.

5. Victims of Sin Film Screening

This classic film from 1951 is presented by the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the North Carolina Latin American Film Festival and is to be held at the NCMA Museum on November 17, complete with subtitles. The film was chosen to celebrate Latin America’s contribution to film and art. The story itself is about a temperamental cabaret dancer who finds an abandoned baby in a trash bin and raises him, over the objections of her pimp.
