Incredible 128 Acre Film Production Site with 10 Film Studios Planned near Atlanta, GA
Just outside Atlanta, GA the wheels are turning and the ideas flowing for one media company that has set its sights on the old Doraville Assembly. Once a General Motors manufacturing plant. Soon to be state-of-the-art, incredible 128 acre film production site, complete with 10 film studios and other world-class filmmaking amenities.
The plan, for Doraville’s Assembly project to become the next, “Studio City,” just outside Atlanta, GA will bring more than just film studios and production environments, says Gray Television, “The company’s plan for the site, which also includes apartments, townhomes, a hotel, corporate offices, restaurants, and retail space,” represents one of the greatest investments into Doraville since the plant opened in the 1940s.
A City within a City with a Focus on Filmmaking
According to Pearl Road Assembly Yard, the subsidiary of Gray Television which is poised to start this history making project, the multi phase project with a focus on filmmaking will transform the Doraville Assembly GM plant into a film and entertainment epicenter.
After the GM plant closed as a result of the 2008 Recession, the 165+ acre campus has largely sat empty for more than a decade. However, the redevelopment could change the former campus for the better.
Plans for the site potentially include:
- 10 film studios
- An E-gaming, digital media, and robotics building
- 750 multifamily housing units
- 300K square feet of office space

“Over the next decade, we’re going from casting aluminum and casting steel to casting talent and content worldwide.”
Prime Time for Production
Proponents of the project state it’s a prime time for production–both production of the upcoming infrastructure and associated real estate, and production of films, movies, television and worldwide media.
In fact, while the GM plant transformation hasn’t been the easiest, and it has faced many challenges and roadblocks along the way, of this massive project will allow Gray media to draw in the attention of some of the big players in the industry.
Including NBC Universal, Amazon, Netflix, and others that have largely shifted focus along with consumer interest for demand driven media.
Entertainment Business is Booming
Filmmaking in recent months have been incredibly productive for Georgia, resulting in more production output and films than ever before. In fact, more films have been produced in Georgia in recent history than in the entire prior history, all together.
Demand for production has greatly increased throughout the state, with production studios and area soundstages frequently booked months in advance.
There’s certainly a need for increased access to area filmmaking environments — and, as long as capital and financing go as planned, development of the 128 acre film production site with a focus on specifically improving the area and preparing for long-term filmmaking demand is sure to not only kick off, but to quickly move forward as planned.
