To help you understand the various types of liability insurance for public filming that might come up during discussions with a vendor or location owner, we’ve put together the following guide.

Public Liability Insurance

Public liability insurance provides vital coverage for filmmakers that will be filming on location. Or those who will be filming anywhere that there could be members of the public involved.

This coverage provides protection against claims made by those who are not employed or contracted by the filmmaker. Generally members of the public, who get injured or who’s property is otherwise damaged in the course of film production.

Public liability coverage for filmmakers protects the filmmaker if someone gets hurt. Or if the property incurs damage.

Professional Liability Insurance

In addition to public liability insurance, you might consider carrying professional liability insurance for added protection.

This coverage is sometimes known as professional indemnity insurance. It provides protection for you in the event that a customer is unsatisfied with the job you’ve done. This coverage is popular for filmmakers that produce short films, commercials, and similar projects.

Property & Equipment Insurance

Another form of insurance that you might want to carry, especially if you’re filming in public, will be property insurance or equipment insurance.

This is not the same as public liability insurance, but it is important. This insurance covers any damage that might occur to your own property or equipment such as damage to a camera, computer, or to other premises of your studio.

Comprehensive Public Liability Insurance

Finally, if you’re interested in maximizing your coverage, one of the best types of liability insurance for public filming is comprehensive public liability insurance.

This provides protection against a number of different claims that could arise during your filmmaking. Including claims made by the public as well as your own claims for damage to property, medical expenses, or other needs.

More commonly referred to as general liability coverage, comprehensive public liability insurance provides a bundled coverage of protection to support you and your business in all of your filmmaking needs both in public and on private locations.
